Acclaimed Summer Theater from the Banyan Theater Company

The acclaimed Banyan Theater Company, located in Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf coast, produces professional theater with outstanding actors performing internationally celebrated plays each summer. Works by playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw, Chekhov, Ibsen, Pinter and Stoppard are featured to provide the community – and Florida hotel guests visiting the area – with a unique theater experience.

In the summer of 2007, the Banyan Theater Company will present A Doll House (written by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by Frank McGuinness) between June 28 and July 15.  Throughout this 1997 Tony Award-winning 19th century drama, Nora, a vibrant, young housewife, deals with her marriage and her future.
 
Also in 2007, Florida hotel guests and local theater enthusiasts can enjoy Enigma Variations (by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt and translated by Jeremy Sams), which will be performed from July 19 through August 5.  “Riveting throughout with revelations and reversals,” said LA Weekly, this play features a Nobel Prize-winning author named Abel Znorko, who lives as a recluse on a remote island in the Norwegian Sea.  Journalist Erik Larsen arrives to interview Abel about his latest book – a collection of letters between two people in love.  As the drama unfolds, controversy and the layers of a triangular relationship are revealed.
    
     Finally, Faith Healer (by Brian Friel) will be performed between August 9 and August 26 by the Banyan Theater Company.  In this production, Frank Hardy is a charismatic Irishman who travels the backroads of Wales peddling his healing miracles.  Is he endowed with a unique and awesome gift or is he a con man?  Find out when you visit a Florida hotel and enjoy the play, heralded as “A rare work of art” by The New York Times.

     The Banyan Theater Company itself is frequently recognized and has received a number of awards.  Creative Loafing, a trendy film, music, arts & entertainment magazine, showered the Banyan Theater Company with recognition in a number of categories in its “Best of the Suncoast, 2006” list.  Of the establishment, the magazine said, “one could hope that Banyan Theater – which brought us three of the top 10 [Theater  Events] in 2006 – weren't just a summer, but a year-round organization."
